Doon by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon: Young Adult Review

Doon (Doon #1) by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon. August 2013. Blink. Goodreads.

DOON…

Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the ALan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at DoonSeries.com

~Destiny awaits!

WOW!! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I LOVED this book! Doon was perfect for my romantic heart. Sidenote: I’ve never watched Brigadoon the movie all the way through so I can’t tell you how the book compares to that.

Don’t you love a book that catches you from the start and tells you you’re going to love it? I read till midnight then awoke at 5 wanting to read but forced myself to sleep. I love having a book I wake up thinking about.

It takes place in SCOTLAND then a magical world in Scotland. The scenery was gorgeous with lush greens and mountains and men in kilts. The chemistry between the 2 possible couples was so huge and charged. Don’t worry, it stayed mostly clean.

Veronica/Vee and MacKenna/Kenna were both great MCs. I enjoyed both of their POVs. The main focus for this book was on Veronica. Destined for Doon has a red head on the cover so I’m thinking Kenna will be the focus for book 2.

I wish I could talk more about the book, but I don’t want to spoil anything. I’d love to see this series as a movie. That would be beautiful. Doon is for those who love YA romance and books that take you from real world to fantasy world.

After reading this you won’t be able to get enough of it so here’s some links. Pinterest: Doon Lorie’s Board. Pinterest: Doon Series. Blink on YouTube. I need book 2 asap.

The Paris Connection by Cerella Sechrist: Adult Review and Blog Tour

Bonjour Paris text with tower eiffel and bicycle. Romantic postc

I am happy to be in The Paris Connection blog tour today hosted by Amber Stokes with Seasons of Humility. Blog Tour Home

The Paris Connection by Cerella Sechrist. March 2014. Harlequin Heartwarming. Goodreads.

Sparks are flying in the City of Light

Emma Brooks, single mom and managing director at the leading recruiting firm in Paris, was against their merger with an American company from the start. Not only was her firm losing its autonomy, she was losing her well-deserved promotion to Cole Dorset—a handsome, arrogant interloper from New York!

How did Cole’s ex-girlfriend’s dream of moving to Paris become his nightmare? Now he’s got to find his way in a new country, and the woman showing him the ropes wants to string him up by one. But as he gets to know Emma and her daughter, he realizes Paris may have more to offer than he thought….

This was such a pleasant read. I have never been to Paris, but now I must go!

It’s so fun when the two main characters hate each other from the start. It always makes me laugh. Cole and Emma did not get off to a good start, but things get better. I mean, look at the cover! No seriously look at it. 😀 Cole was seriously charming and Emma was strong and likable. I really enjoyed this book!

I recommend The Paris Connection to contemporary romance lovers and Paris lovers. You’ll enjoy it! Check out the rest of the stops on the tour. Blog Tour Home

Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck: Adult Review

Once Upon a Prince (Royal Wedding #1) by Rachel Hauck. May 2013. Zondervan. Goodreads.

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess—just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn’t going according to plan. When her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer breaks up instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life.

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simon’s Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family’s tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna’s aid under the fabled Lover’s Oak, he is blindsided by love.

Their lives are worlds apart. He’s a royal prince. She’s an ordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel’s coronation.

It’s the ultimate choice. His kingdom or her heart? God’s will or their own?

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this book yet! I LOVED it! The day I got Once Upon a Prince from NetGalley I stopped what I was reading and devoured it. Come on, it had the word Prince in it.

Poor Susanna had it rough when her long time boyfriend, and I mean LONG… 14 years long, broke up with her. This happens on the first page so I’m not spoiling anything. Then along comes Nathaniel all charming and thoughtful. I love modern fairy tales. The best part of this book is that Susanna didn’t know Nate was a prince when they met. The things her mom had him do at their diner was just hilarious.

If hearing the word Prince creates butterflies in your stomach, like it does for me, than Once Upon a Prince is a must read for you! Now I need to go read some of Rachel’s other books.

Emma: A Latter-day Tale by Rebecca H. Jamison: New Adult Review

Emma: A Latter-day Tale by Rebecca H. Jamison. August 2013. Bonneville. Goodreads.

Emma’s her name and matchmaking is her game! Quirky life coach Emma wants to help her first-ever client, a lonely nanny named Harriet. But all of her attempts at matchmaking result only in embarrassing miscues and blunders, leaving the pair disheartened and confused. This modern take on the Jane Austen classic shows that sometimes the greatest match is the one we make for ourselves.

I’ve read all of Jane Austen’s books and recommend them to all romance lovers. The language can be hard to follow and a little slow at times, but I love the subtle comedy in her stories. Emma is my least favorite story because she kind of annoys me. Do you want to know why I read Emma and Emma retellings? There’s one word . . . KNIGHTLEY! He is my favorite, kind, smart, noble, and handsome.

Emma in Emma: A Latter-day Tale is training to become a life coach until then she’s the receptionist at a dental office. She wants to help people. I do like that about Emma, but the poor girl is so focused on others she doesn’t realize her own issues! This retelling stayed close to the original. I liked reading a scene and realizing which original scene it represented. Some people don’t like retellings to stay close to the orginal, but I don’t mind. It can make the read really relaxing and fun. I enjoyed the side characters: Harri (Harriet), Jenna, Hank, and Phil. Jenna was a rising country singer so the media and reporters added a fun element to the story.

I really enjoyed this read. If you enjoy modern retellings, LDS fiction, or the orginal Emma then you should definitely read Emma: A Latter-day Tale

Note: This story is Christian Fiction, specifically Latter-day Saint or Mormon. To find out more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints visit lds.org or mormon.org

Beauty and the Beast by Jenni James: YA Review

Beauty and the Beast by Jenni James. June 2012. Stonehouse Ink. Goodreads.

A prince by day and a wolf by night—
Prince Alexander has been turned into a werewolf and has one year to find someone to love the beast and break the spell, or he will be a wolf forever. He has nearly given up achieving the impossible, knowing no girl would ever fall in love with such a monster.
Just when he is about to abdicate the throne to his cousin, he meets Cecelia Hammerstein-Smythe, while a wolf, and begins to hope for the first time in months. Can he balance both worlds as a human and beast, gaining the love and trust of a girl who has every reason to despise him?
Cecelia detests the prince. She only knows Alexander as the arrogant monarch—the tyrant who has made her life miserable—though perhaps he’s changed right before her eyes. He’s not as full of himself as he once was. The prince is gentle now… but then again, so is the beast.

I read this around Christmas time. After my boys were asleep I snuggled on the couch near my Christmas tree and read this lovely retelling of a classic fairy tale.

As far as Disney fairy tales go, Beauty and the Beast was not my favorite growing up. I feel shallow saying it, but I couldn’t get over the beasts appearance and behavior. This retelling was SO MUCH BETTER!

It was completely relateable and believable for this Beauty to fall for the Beast. I love the different way Jenni James told this story. This Beast was beyond loveable. He was caring and understanding. Building a friendship is so important in a relationship which is exactly what Cecelia and the beast have an opportunity to do.

There wasn’t a huge villain role and were a few cheesy lines which I of course loved. 🙂 If you love fairy tale retellings like I do and love clean romance, you must read Beauty and the Beast. Now I need to read the entire Faerie Tale Collection!

Destined for Doon by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon: Waiting On Wednesday

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly post where I share a book I’m anxiously waiting to be published. hosted by Breaking the Spine

Destined for Doon (Doon #2) by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon. Blink. Goodreads.
to be published September 4, 2014

The second book in the popular new Doon YA series that takes on a classic story, Brigadoon, and spins it in a new way to give readers a fresh, modern experience.

In this sequel to Doon, Kenna Reid realizes she made a horrible mistake-choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon. Worse, she’s received proof she and Duncan are meant to be, along with torturous visions of the prince she left behind. So when Duncan shows up and informs Kenna that Doon needs her, she doesn’t need to think twice. But even if Kenna can save the enchanted kingdom, her happily ever after may still be in peril.

The Doon novels are a part of Blink, HarperCollins Christian Publishing’s new YA imprint that delivers empowering and heartening literature while maintaining a tradition of imaginative and impactful storytelling.

I LOVED Doon which was the first book in this series. I’m going to RAVE about it soon in a review post. Seriously, go read book 1!! I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen! I’m very impatient for this book.

Under Zenith by Shannen Crane Camp: NA Review, Blog Tour, Giveaway

I am so HAPPY to be a part of Merp Squad Tours! These guys are the coolest. Here’s the Blog Tour Schedule. Today is the first day of the tour!

Under Zenith by Shannen Crane Camp. February 2014. CHBB Publishing. Goodreads.

It was the most important day of her life, and for 21-year-old Isla Edison, graduating from college with a useless degree in vocal performance was all part of her master plan. Dying in a car accident only hours later wasn’t part of that plan. Yet there she was, standing over her own lifeless body and panicking about ruining the truck her parents had bought as a graduation present. Talk about a bad way to repay them.

If coming to terms with the hereafter wasn’t enough to deal with, Isla suddenly finds herself stuck with Hayden, a gorgeous Brit with a bad attitude and a penchant for throwing her off cliffs to keep her in line. Worst of all, Hayden is her Guide, and until she completes six impossible and totally random tasks to reach her mysterious Destination, she’s stuck with him. Isla’s major problem, though, is that she doesn’t know what reaching her Destination actually entails, and soon the mystery surrounding her new afterlife seems more ominous than any purgatory she could possibly imagine. Now Isla must decide if she’ll trust her dark and brooding Guide despite his “bad boy” act, or if she’ll risk failing her tasks and facing the unknown alone.

You may have noticed that I love Shannen Crane Camp and her books! I’ve read all six of them. This book was super interesting. I didn’t know what to think of it for most of the read. I was like “What?!” “Are You Kidding Me?!” Poor Isla had to go through a lot of junk. It was frustrating, but of course Shannen created a character that I had to cheer for. I wanted to see her succeed even if I was getting a little impatient.

Hayden. Oh Hayden. I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with him. I loved every moment with him and Isla. They made me laugh.

This is a book you’ll want your friends to read so you can talk about it. You will get so attached to the main character that you’ll be frustrated along with her, but in the end you’ll love it! If you enjoy clean New Adult romance mixed with laughs and excitement then Under Zenith is the book for you.

3 Stars, YA Review by Stars

Allegiant by Veronica Roth: YA Review

Book 1: Divergent
Book 2: Insurgent

Allegiant by Veronica Roth. October 2013. Katherine Tegen Books. Goodreads.

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

The first 2 books in this series I gave 5 of 5 stars. I loved them! I was not expecting this kind of book for the finale of such an action packed dystopian series.

For me, the first 3/4 of the book was slow. I don’t always mind a slow pace, but I do mind when the first 2 books are so intense. At the beginning there was a lot of learning about the world which was cool but didn’t keep my interest. It made me think Roth had planned the first 2 books, but then had to make up unrelated stuff for the last book. It’s all about expectations sometimes, sad but true.

Like I said, it took awhile but when things really started going it was definitely entertaining. Tris was still a fierce but tender character full of despair but love as well. Tobias struggled, and I didn’t like him for a few chapters. But then I realized he’s human with ups and downs that he learned from. I didn’t think he reacted like the Four we knew, but I guess the guy was allowed to change when living such a hard life. I learned from these two main characters about life and love. I actually highlighted quotes in my Kindle which I rarely do.

The ups and downs in their relationship made me not care if they stayed together. Some of their ups felt unnatural after their downs. I felt blah and confused about their relationship.

If you read the first two books in the Divergent series then you HAVE to read Allegiant to find out how their story ends. If this book is made into a movie I think it will be really entertaining. I can’t wait to see Divergent in theaters soon!
