Book Review: I’m So Sure by Jenny B. Jones

THIS IS BOOK 2 IN THE SERIES
Book 1: So Not Happening

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: I’m So Sure
Author: Jenny B. Jones
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Publishers
Release Date: November 2009
Pages: 312
Series: The Charmed Life #2
5 STARS: I LOVED IT!!!

Living in Truman, Oklahoma wasn’t 100% miserable for Bella. Sure, she misses Manhattan, couture clothes, and her dad. But she was making new friends at Truman High and almost enjoying her work at the school newspaper. Then the whole stepdad-wrestler-reality-show issue hit and her life is now being splashed across weekly tabloids and broadcast news. As if having a camera crew following her around isn’t bad enough, Bella soon discovers a conspiracy against the Truman High prom queen candidates. And the closer she gets to the answer, the more danger she’s in.

As her relationship with Luke teeters between friendship and romance, Bella’s ex-boyfriend Hunter reappears and vies for Bella’s attention. Denying allegations of a love triangle, working to solve the prom queen mystery, and trying to keep her cool on national television finally motivate Bella to start talking–and listening–to God more.

But what comes next has Bella once again screaming: “I’M. SO. SURE.”

My Thoughts:
I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much while reading a book. The voice of Bella, the MC, was spunky, cute, and fun. Bella was a rich girl now transplanted into country life. Her little step-brother even had a pet cow. Her step-dad was a wrestler trying to make it pro so her family ended up on a reality tv show.

While camera men followed her around and splashed her ‘love life’ on the tabloids she became like Nancy Drew. Bella felt she was the best one to do the detective work and couldn’t just leave all the fun for the police. The mystery kept the story moving and interesting while the every day life of a teenage girl like Bella kept it hilarious.

I’m So Sure was another great book in The Charmed Life series. I wish there was more at the end, but that’s what book 3 is for!

Book Review: Pwned by Shannen Crane Camp

Title: Pwned
Author: Shannen Crane Camp
Publisher: Sugar Coated Press
Release Date: April 2013
Pages: 248

5 STARS: I LOVED IT!!!

Reagan West has a perfect life. She’s at the top of the high school food chain as co-captain of the cheerleading squad and she’s best friends with the most evil girl in Albany, Tawny Perez, which means she’s never on the receiving end of her wrath. The only trouble in Reagan’s perfect life comes from the constant threat of her dirty little secret leaking to her fellow classmates and casting her into a lifetime of ridicule.

Reagan West is a closet gamer and hates her role as the evil cheerleader.

But, as any well versed teenager knows, it’s better to suppress your own nerdy tendencies than to submit to a lifetime of being shoved into lockers and so, Reagan bravely soldiers through life as a reluctant bully… until a boy from her guild moves to her school and becomes Tawny’s next target. The newcomer threatens to reveal Reagan’s nerdy little secret and force her to come to terms with who she truly is. Now Reagan has to decide if she’s going to defend her fellow geeks, or if she’ll continue to be a total troll.

My Thoughts:
Shannen Crane Camp is such a fun author! Love her. If you like Janette Rallison then you’ll like Shannen Crane Camp.

The voice of Reagan cracked me up from the very beginning. She was pretty silly at times, especially at the beginning. She was insecure with skewed priorities. Not a great combination. At least the reason why she acted the way she did was explained even if I didn’t think it was the best choice. But hey, it’s fun to watch a character grow. Paker/Rekap was awesome, such a great friend and a good looking “nerd.”

This wasn’t a super intense book that I just couldn’t put down, but when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it and wondering what was going to happen next in Reagan’s life. I’ve never played an online computer game, but that didn’t matter. Reading about a hard-core gamer was like reading a book with a soccer player main character when you don’t play soccer. It was fun to learn a little more about gaming, a world on its own.

Read Pwned whether you game or not. It was laugh out loud funny and a fun insight into high school life.

Book Review: Unenchanted by Chanda Hahn

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: UnEnchanted
Author: Chanda Hahn
Publisher: Chanda Hahn
Release Date: 2011
Pages: 216
Series: An Unfortunate Fairy Tale #1
5 STARS: I LOVED IT!!!

Mina Grime is unlucky, unpopular and uncoordinated, that is until she saves her crush’s life on a field trip, changing her High School status from loser to hero overnight. But with her newfound fame brings misfortune as an old family curse come to light. For Mina is descended from the Brothers Grimm and has inherited all of their unfinished fairy tale business. Which includes trying to outwit a powerful Story from making her its next fairytale victim.

To break the fairy tale curse on her family and stop these deadly events, Mina must finish the tales until the very Grimm end.

My Thoughts:

I finished reading this book while walking the hospital breezeway trying to progress what turned out to be false labor. It was almost midnight, and I was told to walk for an hour and a half. Even with that exhausting and annoying real life experience happening I still LOVED this book! Random info I thought you might like to know. 🙂 Thank you Chanda Hahn for writing a book that could take me away for a few hours when I really needed it.

UnEnchanted was such a surprising delight! I loved it! What more can I say? It was unique and interesting. Mina was a main character I felt was my best friend that I wanted to see succeed. There were short spurts of POV from most of the side characters at least once. Sometimes that style of POV change can be confusing or annoying, but it was really well done and added to the story.

I’m going to gush a little about Brody. Oh sigh. He was super sweet and seriously the PERFECT modern-day Prince. Handsome and Gentlemanly.

The ending made me want to scream! If I didn’t think things would get worked out in the next book then I would probably hate this book because of the ending. BUT I believe things will work out. I need to read book 2 soon to find out.

If you love fairy tales or just really good books with romance then you’ll love this book!

Book Review: The Shapeshifter’s Secret by Heather Ostler

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: The Shapeshifter’s Secret
Author: Heather Ostler
Publisher: Cedar Fort
Release Date: June 2012
Pages: 328
Series: The Shapeshifter’s Secret #1
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Like any sixteen-year-old, Julia’s used to dealing with problems. From her overprotective father to her absent mother to a teacher who definitely has it in for her. But everything changes when Julia’s reactions become oddly vicious and angry—more animal than human. This action-packed adventure has it all: humor, romance, and a plot that’ll keep you guessing to the very last page.

My Thoughts:

When things went wrong at school Julia was sent to a castle boarding school to learn more about her discovered talent, her mom, and what her dad really does. The Shapeshifter’s Secret is a great title because there were a lot of secrets to discover in this read.

It took reading the first 3rd of the book before I got into it. I guess I didn’t connect with Julia for some reason. When I finished the book and looked back I still didn’t know why I didn’t feel connected. I liked Julia’s character but maybe it was all the secrets I thought were going on. Even at the end there’s still a certain character I don’t trust, but that actually makes me want to read the next book even more. I have to find out more about this character (I won’t even mention the name because I don’t want to give anything away!). It seems my suspicions about him were wrong, but I don’t believe it. I need to read book 2!

Julia has 2 friends, Gabe and Sierra, who really add to the story. They were great. I really enjoyed this book! If you love fantasy, especially fantasy that is discovered in the real world, then you’ll love this book. I can’t wait to read more!

Book Review: Revenge of the Cheerleaders by Janette Rallison

THIS IS BOOK 3 IN A SERIES!

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Revenge of the Cheerleaders
Author: Janette Rallison
Publisher: Walker Childrens
Release Date: October 2007
Pages: 256
Series: Pullman High #3
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Chelsea’s school year has taken a turn for the worse. After being dumped by her boyfriend and humiliated at the pep assembly by her younger sister’s boyfriend, Rick, she’s just concentrating on avoiding any other major embarrassments.

That’s when Rick and his band debut their new album, complete with a whole set of songs bashing cheerleaders. Chelsea’s humiliation has reached a whole new level now that everyone is walking down the halls singing the words to “Dangerously Blonde.”

It’s time to make Rick pay. All he wants is to win the High School Idol audition, so he can be on his way to rock star fame and fortune. But with the help of her best friends, Aubrie and Samantha, Chelsea is going to steal his victory right out from under him.

The characters from All’s Fair in Love, War and High School are back, only this time it’s payback.

My Thoughts:
So if you read All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School you have to read the next part of their story. Revenge of the Cheerleaders was from Chelsea’s POV, but Sam and Logan came back in the story too. So fun to see Sam and Logan and to watch Chelsea make her way toward a little romance herself. I loved the way Chelsea met a certain guy- I won’t mention names 😉 – at the beginning of the book. Super cute and pretty funny.

Not much else to say. It was a fun read! Just like all of Janette Rallison’s books, it was hilarious and had a cute romance. If you like reading high school contemporary romantic comedies then you’ll really enjoy this entire series!

Book Review: All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School by Janette Rallison

THIS IS BOOK 2 IN A SERIES
Book 1: Blue Eyes and Other Teenage Hazards

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School
Author: Janette Rallison
Publisher: Walker Childrens
Release Date: September 2005
Pages: 192
Series: Pullman High #2
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

When your chance for getting into college and your date for the prom are all on the line…

Sixteen-year-old Samantha Taylor is used to having things go her way. She’s head cheerleader and has all the right friends and a steady stream of boyfriends. But when she tanks the SATs, her automatic assumptions about going to college don’t appear to be so automatic anymore. She determines that her only hope for college admission is to win the election for student body president. Unfortunately, with her razor wit and acid tongue she’s bettersuited to dishing out insults than winning votes.

When she brashly bets her classmate Logan that she can go two weeks without uttering a single insult, Samantha immediately realizes that she may have bitten off more than she can chew. And when her current boyfriend dumps her, less than three weeks before the prom, it couldn’t be a worse time to be forced to keep her opinions to herself. Finding a new boyfriend will be a challenge now that Logan shadows her every move, hoping to catch her slipping back into her old ways. Samantha is determined to win the election and find a dream date for the prom, no matter what it takes. After all . . . all’s fair in love and war (and high school!).

My Thoughts:
I really loved Blue Eyes and Other Teenage Hazards (book 1) and had no idea there was another book in the series. I’d heard of All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School but didn’t know it had some of the characters from BEOTH.

The MC Samantha was actually the girl you might not like in book 1. It was really fun to see inside her head and watch her change. I love that Logan bet her that she couldn’t keep from insulting people for two weeks. Hah! It was so funny to be inside her head and hear what she was keeping herself from saying.

Laugh out loud funny with a great story All’s Fair in Love, War, and High School is a great book for anyone to read.

Blackmoore: A Proper Romance
By Julianne Donaldson
Publisher: Shadow Mountain
Release Date: September 28, 2013

Kate Worthington knows her heart and she knows she will never marry. Her plan is to travel to India instead—if only to find peace for her restless spirit and to escape the family she abhors. But Kate’s meddlesome mother has other plans. She makes a bargain with Kate: India, yes, but only after Kate has secured—and rejected—three marriage proposals.

Kate journeys to the stately manor of Blackmoore determined to fulfill her end of the bargain and enlists the help of her dearest childhood friend, Henry Delafield. But when it comes to matters of love, bargains are meaningless and plans are changeable. There on the wild lands of Blackmoore, Kate must face the truth that has kept her heart captive. Will the proposal she is determined to reject actually be the one thing that will set her heart free?

Set in Northern England in 1820, Blackmoore is a Regency romance that tells the story of a young woman struggling to learn how to follow her heart. It is Wuthering Heights meets Little Women with a delicious must-read twist.
