5 STARS: I LOVED IT!!!

A Proper Romance

Ariella was only looking for a distraction, something to break up the monotony of palace life. What she found was a young man willing to overlook her title and show her a new and vibrant way of life. But when her growing feelings for Gavin spiral out of control and clash with the expectations of her station, she will discover that the consequences of her curiosity are far more severe than she’d imagined.

“I watched in helpless horror as two guards hauled Gavin to his feet and dragged him from the room. My voice was frozen, unable to protest as another guard took hold of my arm, leading me upstairs. From the confines of my room, I stared into the darkness beyond my window, hoping to catch one more glimpse of Gavin. He was gone, and I wondered if he would have been better off if he had never met me.”

My Thoughts:
I loved this book! It was so full of emotions making me laugh, cry, and yell. I love a book when I feel connected to the characters, especially the main character. By page one I was hooked. Something about Ariella’s voice made me feel like I was hearing a friend’s story. I wanted Ariella (Ella) to succeed and be happy because I felt a connection to her. She was strong and brave even though she didn’t see herself that way. She was a little sassy and spunky at times. I loved watching her grow. This book took place over a few years, something I’m not used to, but it really worked with this story. The relationships felt real with such a long span of time.

My heart ached for Ella and Gavin. Talk about a doomed relationship! Royalty and commoners never mix romantically without a lot of trials along the way. I haven’t read as many books where the man is the commoner and the woman the royal so that was unique. Gavin was so sweet and protective. I loved each moment they had together.

This wasn’t just a romance though. There was so much more growth that happened with Ella while finding her place with her family and royal life.

Just Ella was a beautiful story of romance and learning to be your true self. This is a book worth buying this year!

Author Annette K. Larsen

I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff Arizona and St. Louis Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended college at Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children.

I have Charlotte Bronte to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to sacrifice what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but it the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.

I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

I write clean romance. Why? Because that’s what I love to read, but over the years I’ve discovered it’s quite a challenge to find good clean romance. I believe it’s a genre that many people are looking for and too few authors are writing. My first novel, Just Ella, took me many years to write because I wanted it to be more than just a cutesy love story. I wanted it to have depth, to feel genuine. Hopefully I succeeded, but you’ll have to be the judge.

Book Review: Sugar Coated by Shannen Crane Camp

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Sugar Coated
Author: Shannen Crane Camp
Publisher: Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing
Release Date: September 2013
Pages:
Series: The Sugar Coated Trilogy #1
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

An unhealthy addiction to sugar cubes, a deep-seated fear of water, and universal luxury—these are the simple things that make up 18-year-old Brynn’s Utopian existence. Why, then, is her perfect life also plagued with unanswered questions?

Like every other resident of the planet Halcyon, Brynn’s home provides everything she needs, money is unheard of, and life is perfect. But unlike the rest of Seaside’s residents, Brynn has questions. Why can’t people leave the city? Why does the ocean fill everyone with terror? Who are the Workers? Not only is Brynn curious where others are compliant, but she suffers from chronic nightmares of an angelic woman torturing her for information she doesn’t possess. But these are more than just figments of her imagination; they’re memories of things that never happened.

When Brynn meets Jonah, a brilliant, library-dwelling boy who shares her questions and her curiosity, they formulate a plan to find answers. Somewhere, the perfect veneer of Halcyon’s instant gratification hides a city that only Brynn knows about—a city she and Jonah are determined to find. But will finding the city give them answers, or simply uncover the horrific truth behind the perfection?

My Thoughts:
Every time I read one of Shannen’s books I get swept away with the characters. I love her characters! This book had the added treat to see a new world built. Her other books are contemporary, but this “Utopian” society was so different and interesting.

Along with being given anything they want the people of this society are taught to be afraid of water! It was such an intriguing and different idea. Even though I love water, I was terrified for them. I related to Brynn’s pull to the water even though she new she shouldn’t want to be near it and was afraid.

With all the world and character building the first half of the book started to feel a little slow. BUT then things picked up and got really exciting!

Jonah and Ty are both great guys! Their banter with Brynn was always entertaining, either hilarious or flirty. Ty was so sweet and deserves a great girl, but I’m Team Jonah. We’ll see if that changes during the next book.

Sugar Coated pulled me into a new world with characters I had to root for. If you like utopian/dystopian reads then you’ll love this one! Prepare yourself for a big cliff hanger at the end!

Enjoy this exciting new series of clean novellas by six critically-acclaimed authors.

Book 1: Home Matters by Julie N. Ford
Book 2: Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin
Book 3: Righting A Wrong by Rachael Anderson
Book 4: Lost and Found by Karey White
Book 5: Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver
Book 6: Immersed in Love by Jennifer Griffith

Home Matters by Julie N. Ford

According to her mother, Olivia Pembroke was born to be a star. But how is she supposed to be famous when she can’t even get a decent acting gig? Her lucky break comes when she lands an audition for a wildly popular home improvement show. Even though she has no design training and has never even held a power tool, she refuses to let that stop her. She’s confident that her destiny is finally within reach.

When her affections are torn between her heartthrob co-host and the irritating, yet somehow endearing lead contractor, does she continue to reach for the stars? Or does she design a new happily ever after? One that leads not to the fading lights of fame and fortune, but to a love that will burn forever.

Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin

Drew Westfall wants nothing more than to forget what he had to do in the name of “smart” business. Cutting off all ties with his parents—including handing over the entire contents of his trust fund to a charity—he takes off for Bridger, Colorado where his best friend has an extra room for him. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that his business degree won’t do him much good in a town as small as Bridger, but he’s broke and has nowhere else to go.

Eden Torresi has every reason to wallow. Not only did she lose her mother, but she had to drop out of nursing school and is in a relationship with a guy unwilling to commit. But Eden isn’t the wallowing type. Instead, she chooses to spend most of her time taking care of the seniors at Silver Linings Nursing home. When she learns that her boyfriend’s new roommate is down on his luck, her caring nature makes her want to reach out to him and offer what help she can. But the more time they spend together, the more complicated things get, especially when the seniors of Silver Linings decide to play matchmaker.

Righting a Wrong by Rachael Anderson

Seven years ago, Cambri Blaine fled her small hometown of Bridger, Colorado after her senior year ended in a fiasco. Only Jace Sutton knew the real reason why—that she was a spineless coward. Now, seven years later, her father’s been in an accident and needs help, and Cambr has no choice but to return home. So with trepidation, she takes a leave of absence from the landscape architecture firm where she works and boards a plane, hoping against hope that Jace is no longer around and that the past can stay where it belongs—in the past.

If only life worked that way.

Jace never expected to see Cambri again. After she’d led him on, bruised his heart, and left town without a backward glance, he was forced to pick up the pieces and try not to hate her for it. Eventually, he put it behind him and moved on, creating a life for himself in his beloved hometown. But now that Cambri is back and looking more beautiful and sophisticated than ever, some of those old feelings resurface, and Jake instinctively knows, for the sake of his heart, that he needs to avoid her at all costs.

If only it were that easy.

Lost and Found by Karey White

Lydia was supposed to have an adventurous and exciting summer. Instead she’s done nothing more than read and eat takeout. Now it’s time to go home, and what does she have to show for it? A big fat nothing. Unless, of course, her trip to the airport somehow turns into something more than just a flight home.

Blake feels like he’s been sent on a wild goose chase. While work is piling up back in Denver, he’s on the other side of the country, hunting for some mysterious box that his grandfather left him. Well, no more. Nothing inside that box could possibly be more important than the opportunity to make it as the youngest partner at his firm. So he’s going home, and that’s that. But that’s before he discovers his flight has been cancelled.

When these two strangers meet at the airport, they make a split-second decision to search for the box together. Maybe with both of them on the hunt, Lydia can have her adventure and Blake can find the box. And maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll even find some romance.

Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough.

For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do.

Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

Immersed in Love by Jennifer Griffith

Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever.

But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest.

Until… Erik.

Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she’d never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

These books sound like a great way to kick back and relax into romance land!

Book Review: Glittering Promises by Lisa T. Bergren

THIS IS BOOK 3 IN THE SERIES!

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Glittering Promises
Author: Lisa T. Bergren
Publisher: David C. Cook
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Pages: 464
Series: Grand Tour #3
3 STARS: It Was OK

Lisa T. Bergren’s popular Grand Tour series concludes as Cora Kensington journeys farther into Italy, wrestles with a terrible ultimatum from her father, and comes to terms with the Father who will never fail her.

America’s newest heiress must decide if her potential fortune is rationale enough to give up her freedom and all that God is leading her toward. And when her newly-discovered siblings are threatened with ruin, her quandary deepens. Then as Cora nears Rome, more journalists are track the news story of the decade—“Copper Cora,” the rags-to-riches girl—and want to know more about her family and the men vying for her attention. Meanwhile, a charming Italian countess decides that if Cora isn’t going to claim Will’s heart, she might just try…

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this last book in the series was just okay for me. It felt slow probably because I’m not really familiar with Europe so the descriptions were longer than I’d prefer and many of the places blurred together for me. I think overall if the book was shorter it would have felt fast paced, but I don’t think fast paced is the goal for this series. All of the books give beautiful descriptions of Europe and its history. Glittering Promises specifically shows us the beautiful cities and countryside of Italy.

I loved the characters of this series. It was nice to think back on book one and see how far they have come. Cora has been through a lot. She was asked to endure a lot through this final book though her trials this time where much different than the first books. Will drove me a little crazy. He seemed a bit hypocritical with his jealousy of Pierre. I wanted more between Will and Cora, but them trying to find their way together was the major plot. I enjoyed hearing more of Vivian this time. She was stronger and more kind.

After the first half of the book things really picked up, and then I loved it. If you read the first two in the book you have to read this final leg of their journey across Europe. The ending was beautiful and the excitement made my heart speed up.

Blog Tour with Review & Giveaway: My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: My Own Mr. Darcy
Author: Karey White
Publisher: Createspace
Release Date: July 2013
Pages: 220
Series: none
4 STARS: I Really Liked It

After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

My Thoughts:
This was such a cute story. Do you love Pride and Prejudice? I do! Have you ever thought about what Mr. Darcy would be like in a modern setting? Maybe back in the 1800s it was better to be quiet and aloof instead of funny and friendly. Mr. Darcy in the 21st century would be a total snob and stiff!

As a teenager Lizzie fell in love with Mr. Darcy in the 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice. She decided she would marry a man like him or not marry at all. Her friend felt it was time to intervene to save her from herself. Lizzie was challenged to go on ten dates with the next guy that asked her out. Chad was the lucky man. Chad was so sweet and funny and fun to be around. When her vision of Mr. Darcy finally walked into her life everything turned upside down though.

It was funny but sometimes painful to watch Lizzie flounder around. I just hoped she wouldn’t ruin her life with her crazy expectations! The poor girl was so confused about what kind of man she should date. It definitely got tiresome to watch her make dumb decisions over and over again. I understood the reason for it, but it still got old and almost made me not like Lizzie anymore.

Did I enjoy this read? Yes! Lizzie had a real reason for her choices no matter how misconstrued they were. Silly girl was all I could say. I really enjoyed the interior design parts of the book. Lizzie graduated in interior design and wanted to make that her career. The design details made me want to decorate my house!

My Own Mr. Darcy showed a modern girl reach for her dreams. It was a cute and light read fans of Pride and Prejudice retellings will enjoy.
