Daughter of Ishmael by Diane Stringam Tolle. 2017. Cedar Fort.
Growing up around prophets and prophecies, Hannah and her sisters are excited to be betrothed to sons of Lehi and to journey to the promised land. But now with her people dividing, Hannah must choose between her faith and her family. Should she follow Nephi again, or stay with her husband, Lemuel, and her son in sin and misery? This compelling novel tells the familiar scripture story from an illuminating new perspective.
Diane Stringam Tolley is an amazing talented author! Her words are written so beautifully.
The Book of Mormon contains true historic writings from Nephi. This story called Daughter of Ishmael is a fiction novel that gives ideas of how life might have been for a woman named Hannah that played a daughter of Ishmael and Nephi’s sister-in-law. I read Daughter of Ishmael as a story, not scripture, and found it intriguing. The novel goes from Hannah being very young to much older. She goes through many difficulties that are heart breaking. She also finds peace and joy through following the prophet.
I’ve never read a scripture historical fiction. It’s not my style, but it was made well. If you love adult scripture historical fiction then you’ll love this beautifully written novel with love, faith, and sadness.
I received this book from Cedar Fort. I am not paid for my reviews. My reviews are solely my opinion.
