Book Review: Poison Me by Cami Checketts

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Poison Me
Author: Cami Checketts
Publisher: Creatspace
Release Date: March 2013
Pages: 268
Series: none
4 STARS: I Really Liked It

Jake Merrill was raised by his grandmother, Ruby, and her hilarious friends. After a suspicious death at the retirement home where Ruby lives, she enlists Jake and Chanel, the beautiful activities director, to help her find the killer. But secrets Ruby has kept for decades threaten her family and the man she’s always loved but could never have. Chanel’s unstable ex-boyfriend, a presumably dead relative, and vicious criminals add to the confusion. Time is running out as Jake, Chanel, and Ruby desperately search for clues to solve the murders and fight to save those they love.

My Thoughts:
I have really enjoyed reading many of Cami Checketts’s books recently. They are fun and romantic. Her other series was more romance/action/suspense while this one was more romance and mystery. The three main characters with POVs were Jake, his grandma Ruby, and Chanel, with a little from the “bad” guy.

I loved that Ruby had a little romantic plot line going on, too cute. Ruby did not want to take the police’s word for it that her friends in the retirement home had died of “old age.” She believed they were murdered and had to prove it. Ruby was cute and feisty. I didn’t think I would connect to a character that much older than me, but I really did. She was too fun.

Jake was rugged, handsome, and a devoted grandson. I loved the scenes with him and Ruby’s retirement friends teasing him. Hilarious! Chanel loved her job at the retirement home, especially when Jake came to visit. I loved the romance building throughout from both couples.

There wasn’t a ton of scenes with Jake’s sister Brinley, but I would love to read her life as a single mom in the next book. She was a strong woman.

Poison Me was funny and utterly romantic for all ages!

Book Review: Almost Daybreak by Teresa McCarthy

THIS IS BOOK 3 OF THE SERIES!
Book 1: Almost Midnight
Book 2: Almost Sundown

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Almost Daybreak
Author: Teresa McCarthy
Publisher: Teresa McCarthy
Release Date: January 2013
Pages: only ebook
Series: Colorado Clearbrook Trilogy #3
4 STARS: I Really Liked It

Rancher Max Clearbrook is the wildest Clearbrook brother. Nothing riles him, nothing except a sweet city woman named Annie Nelson. After being dumped by her fiance, Annie, an accountant, wants to stay clear of men, and Max is the last person she needs in her life. But sometimes opposites attract, or at least Max thinks so…until something goes terribly wrong…

My Thoughts:

The last of the Colorado Clearbrook trilogy was a wonderful entertaining romance like the first two books. Max was the youngest Clearbrok brother at 28 years old and a rugged cowboy. Annie was 25 and looking for a fresh start. She was a friend Hannah met in book one. Again the brothers’ dad Fritz was up to his old matchmaking tricks with some help from his grandson and daughters-in-law.

Max was ridiculously charming as a feisty cowboy. He definitely kept me laughing with his rope and how he used his roping skills. Annie’s first impression of him was pretty funny. There were some good laughs throughout with a whole bunch of romantic tension. Love it.

Take yourself on a beautifully romantic journey by reading the entire Colorado Clearbrook trilogy back to back. Enjoy!

Book Review: Almost Sundown by Teresa McCarthy

THIS IS BOOK 2 OF A SERIES!
Book 1: Almost Midnight

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Almost Sundown
Author: Teresa McCarthy
Publisher: Teresa McCarthy
Release Date: December 2012
Pages: ebook only
Series: Colorado Clearbrook Trilogy #2
4 STARS: I Really Liked It

A sweet contemporary romance where descendants from THE CLEARBROOKS (historical series) are now settled in modern-day Colorado.

Dr. Rafe Clearbrook wants nothing to do with marriage, and Nurse Candy Richards is not for him! Candy knows Rafe’s feelings about marriage and is steering clear of the man. But when Rafe’s matchmaking father interferes, they become more aware of each other than ever before. But Candy soon discovers her lifelong dream may be destroyed by the very man she loves…

My Thoughts:
Another beautiful romance in the Colorado Clearbrooks series. This one follows Tanner’s brother Rafe on his journey to find love. Rafe was such a ladies man as the sought after doctor in town, and Candy was one nurse that didn’t want to fall at his feet. Their chemistry was perfect. Rafe thought he should be able to win any girl’s heart while Candy was going to have non of that. Candy also happened to be Hannah’s best friend from the first book.

Some of this story took place in the Bahamas, and I wish there were more scenery moments there. Beaches are magical places for romance. I enjoyed having the other brothers involved in the story some.

I love these clean romances! They are so fun to read. I love when a romance author can write clean entertaining stories where the characters follow my believes by waiting until marriage to do more than kiss. Some of the lines were a bit cheesy and it seemed to follow the same pattern as book one, but that didn’t bother me.

Almost Sundown was another chemistry filled contemporary romance and found myself wanting more after the last page.

Book Review: Almost Midnight by Teresa McCarthy

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Almost Midnight
Author: Teresa McCarthy
Publisher: Teresa McCarthy
Release Date: December 2012
Pages: ebook only
Series: Colorado Clearbrook Trilogy #1
4 STARS: I Really Liked It

In this clean contemporary romance, the descendants from THE CLEARBROOKS (the author’s historical series set in Regency England) are now settled in modern-day Colorado.

Widower and millionaire Tanner Clearbrook is livid when his matchmaking father secretly hires beautiful Hannah Elliot as tutor to his young son. However, the couple want nothing to do with each other, that is, until one little boy brings them together. But can their love survive a shattering secret?

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed The Clearbrooks series by this author so when I saw this new series about the desendents of the Clearbrooks I had to read it. I’m happy I did!

The story was told from both Hannah’s and Tanner’s POV. Hannah and Tanner met in the most awkward way for Hannah. It was pretty funny and really realistic. Hannah was sweet and caring and somewhat emotionally broken from a past relationship. Tanner was confident and kind but recovering from his own sad past. I was interested to see how they would work out their own emotions and find their way together.

Fritz, Tanner’s dad, hired Hannah to tutor Tanner’s eight year old son Jeremy. That kid was such a cutie. It was sweet to see Tanner as a dad. Fritz was a spunky and hilarious addition to the characters.

This was a beautiful and sweet romance with a charming gentleman of a man. I really enjoyed immersing myself in this book. I wish the two other brothers who are the main characters in the next books were featured more in this first one. Each of the three brothers were amazing in their own way. You’ll want to have all three books ready to read because this is a fun and relaxing clean romance to hide in for a few days.

Blog Tour with Giveaways! Sugar Coated by Shannen Crane Camp

I am so happy to be a part of the Sugar Coated Blog Tour! Shannen Crane Camp is one of my favorite authors. If you haven’t read one of her books you need to!
Check out the poster with the other bloggers and authors in the tour. I love all the extra pictures we get from the cover photo shoot. The model looks just like the main character Brynn. So cool! I love the lace blindfold.

An unhealthy addiction to sugar cubes, a deep-seated fear of water, and universal luxury—these are the simple things that make up 18-year-old Brynn’s Utopian existence. Why, then, is her perfect life also plagued with unanswered questions?

Like every other resident of the planet Halcyon, Brynn’s home provides everything she needs, money is unheard of, and life is perfect. But unlike the rest of Seaside’s residents, Brynn has questions. Why can’t people leave the city? Why does the ocean fill everyone with terror? Who are the Workers? Not only is Brynn curious where others are compliant, but she suffers from chronic nightmares of an angelic woman torturing her for information she doesn’t possess. But these are more than just figments of her imagination; they’re memories of things that never happened.

When Brynn meets Jonah, a brilliant, library-dwelling boy who shares her questions and her curiosity, they formulate a plan to find answers. Somewhere, the perfect veneer of Halcyon’s instant gratification hides a city that only Brynn knows about—a city she and Jonah are determined to find. But will finding the city give them answers, or simply uncover the horrific truth behind the perfection?

Doesn’t this book sound amazing?!

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen;or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It’s all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

Book Review: Imaginable by J. Meyers

THIS IS BOOK 2 IN THE SERIES!
Book 1: Intangible

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Imaginable
Author: J. Meyers
Publisher: J. Meyers
Release Date: April 2013
Pages: 342
Series: Intangible #2
5 STARTS: I LOVED IT!!!

Twins Sera and Luke Raine’s unusual abilities are growing. Sera is healing vampires now, making them human again. And, at times, Luke can actually change the future he Sees.

But Sera’s healing has dangerous consequences, and though Luke is altering the outcome of more visions, he can’t control them yet.

Now Sera is in danger as the dark creatures of the Realm seek to use her. As Luke struggles to master his gift in order to save his sister, he discovers even more about his powers.

And what he learns just may put him in greater danger than Sera has ever been.

My Thoughts:
I love books in a series. It was so fun to feel connected to the characters so quickly because I already knew them. I’m usually not a fan of paranormal, but I loved this book!

The book started a month or more after Intangible ended with POVs from Luke and Sera and sometimes Fey and Jonas. There was some romantic relationships building up throughout the book. Cute. Happy. Sad. Frustrating! I really want to see more of these unique love stories and can’t wait to read the next book.

Full of amazing characters, Imaginable was about relationships. I loved the relationship between the twins Luke and Sera. Luke was hilarious! They had a loyal friend named Quinn who really became a favorite of mine. Other friends were able to show their loyalty and bravery as things got intense and suspenseful. Jonas was cool as always but was seriously a scary and fierce vampire.

Imaginable was intense, exciting, and full of paranormal. A must read for YA paranormal fans!

Book Review: Abandon by Elana Johnson

THIS IS BOOK 3 IN THE SERIES!
Book 1: Possession
Book 2: Surrender

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: Abandon
Author: Elana Johnson
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: June 2013
Pages: 408
Series: Possession #3
 5 STARS: I LOVED IT!!!

seduced by power,
broken by control,
and consumed by love…

Vi has made her choice between Jag and Zenn, and the Resistance may have suffered for it. But with the Thinkers as strong as ever, the rebels still have a job to do. Vi knows better than anyone that there’s more at stake than a few broken hearts.

But there is a traitor among them…and the choices he makes could lead to the total destruction of everything Vi has fought for.

Vi, Jag, and Zenn must set their problems aside for the Resistance to have any hope of ending the Thinkers’ reign. Their success means everything…and their failure means death.

My Thoughts:
I was so torn about this rating. It was hard to come to a decision. I wanted to read it every minute of every day. When I wasn’t reading it I wanted to be. The plot and characters were on my mind constantly. That for me means it was a 5 star book… when I’m that obsessed. I’m just so ANGRY about the ending. I did see it coming and it added to the drama, but I didn’t like it!

Each book in the series had different characters telling their POV. This book was Jag and Zenn. I was so attached to the other characters from previous books that I wished the POV was from all of them, especially Gunn, Vi, and Raine.

This book broke my heart at times. Zenn’s love for Vi made my heart ache. Zenn was my favorite. He was so complex, but with half of the book from his POV he was easy to understand. I felt every emotion with him: heart ache, new love, confusion, anger, fear. This roller coaster of emotions will make you cry… I sure did.

Jagg was still tough and a hard shell to break as the resistance leader. He had some swoony scenes with Vi though. Definitely made me smile.

The end was frustrating, and I didn’t see the purpose for it. It seemed out of character from the rest of the books. Some bad choices by main characters were made that weren’t explained, but maybe that’s the point. No ones perfect.

The Possession series was inventive and thrilling. I loved these books! Abandon was just as wonderful to read. If you haven’t read these books you need to… like soon.

Book Review: So Over My Head by Jenny B. Jones

THIS IS BOOK 3 IN THE SERIES!
Book 1: So Not Happening
Book 2: I’m So Sure

image and summary from Goodreads

Title: So Over My Head
Author: Jenny B. Jones
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Publishers
Release Date: May 2010
Pages: 326
Series: The Charmed Life #3
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Newly single, stalked by a killer, and in desperate need of some chic clown shoes–Bella is one skinny mocha frapp away from total meltdown. When the Fritz Family Carnival makes its annual appearance in Truman, Bella’s keen reporter instincts tell her the bright lights hide more than they reveal. Her suspicions are confirmed when one of the stars is murdered. Though the police make an immediate arrest, Bella doubts this case is quite that simple. She needs her crime-solving boyfriend, Luke, more than ever. Problem is, his ex-girlfriend has moved back to town, giving Bella some murderous thoughts of her own. Then again, there’s no time for a relationship crisis when Bella’s doing her best to derail her father’s wedding and stay one step ahead of a killer. Is God sending her a message in all of this madness? With a murderer on the loose and her boyfriend’s ex on the prowl, this undercover clown has never had more to juggle–or more to risk.

My Thoughts:
Another hilarious read in this super fun series. Bella found herself part of the circus… literally… LOL. She was so focused on solving a murder that happened at the circus that she decided to join up as a clown. Ruthie was a fun sidekick this time, but she came across ditzy unlike just tough in the other book. I liked the murder mystery part of the story. Definitely intriguing.

The relationship part of the story was annoying. I couldn’t figure Luke out! What was the deal?! But I did eventually realize how much Bella needed to grow and work through.  She also wasn’t happy about her Dad wanting to remarry.

This was a fun read with lots of mystery and a great end to the series! If you like funny, clean, contemporary YA fiction you’d love this series.
