4 Stars: I Really Liked It

With a new job, a husband she adores, and a life full of friends, Kit’s life seems pretty much perfect—well, aside from the fact that her husband is in school and way too busy for Kit’s liking. And of course she’s still dealing with the fall-out from her adoptive parents’ divorce.

But when Kit learns that her biological mother wants to meet her, she’s not sure how to react. What good could possibly come from getting to know someone who left you in a dumpster to die?

Exquisitely written and full of heart, Choosing Charity is a can’t-miss read that’s sure to remind you why Christlike love is the greatest virtue of all.

My Thoughts:
Note: This book would be considered Christian fiction, specifically LDS fiction (Latter-day Saints/ Mormons). It wasn’t “preachy.” It mentioned prayer and asking God for help and guidance which for me is normal and every day.

This is the third book in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I didn’t read the first two books, but now I’d like to go back and read those. I think it would have enhanced my reading of Choosing Charity because of the attachment I would have felt for all the characters, but it wasn’t necessary.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was a beautiful story. I loved the main character, Kit, from the beginning. She was easy to connect with. Kit had just graduated from college and had been married a few months. She had a new job and was learning to balance married life. I think the feelings Kit had relating to her parents’ divorce were very realistic. She had a lot of ups and downs with all the different story lines going on. I loved all that was happening in the book. At first I had a hard time remember who all the side characters were, but I soon had it figured out and loved all the side stories. Charity and Lily were my favorite side characters.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, clean, entertaining contemporary. Read below to find out about the giveaway, other blog tour stops, launch party, and more!

Author Bio:

Terri Ferran grew up in a small Colorado town that offered little in the way of entertainment. She escaped through reading (and later on a Continental Trailways bus), and although the town didn’t have a library, she eagerly anticipated the coming of the Bookmobile and would check out stacks of books at a time. She moved to Utah as a high school senior where she joined the LDS Church and met her husband, Tod. She dreamed of being a writer but took the safe route of becoming a CPA. She finally got brave enough to quit working in the world of numbers to pursue her dream of writing and also to spend more time with her children. Her first book, Finding Faith was published in 2007 and she is excited to be living her dream of writing in real life. Terri still loves to read, but she can usually be found writing, doing laundry, dishes, running errands, napping, eating chocolate, or exercising (not necessarily in that order).

Book Review: Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale

Title: Midnight in Austenland
Author: Shannon Hale
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Release Date: January 2012
Pages: 277
Series: Austenland #2

5 Stars: I LOVED IT!!!

When Charlotte Kinder treats herself to a two-week vacation at Austenland, she happily leaves behind her ex-husband and his delightful new wife, her ever-grateful children, and all the rest of her real life in America. She dons a bonnet and stays at a country manor house that provides an immersive Austen experience, complete with gentleman actors who cater to the guests’ Austen fantasies.

Everyone at Pembrook Park is playing a role, but increasingly, Charlotte isn’t sure where roles end and reality begins. And as the parlor games turn a little bit menacing, she finds she needs more than a good corset to keep herself safe. Is the brooding Mr. Mallery as sinister as he seems? What is Miss Gardenside’s mysterious ailment? Was that an actual dead body in the secret attic room? And-perhaps of the most lasting importance-could the stirrings in Charlotte’s heart be a sign of real-life love?

The follow-up to reader favorite Austenland provides the same perfectly plotted pleasures, with a feisty new heroine, plenty of fresh and frightening twists, and the possibility of a romance that might just go beyond the proper bounds of Austen’s world. How could it not turn out right in the end?

My Thoughts:
I need to stop reading books set in Europe! Now I’m desperate to vacation there. One of these days my husband and I will have to take a European tour. Until then, I’ll have to be satisfied with visiting Europe through books.

I loved this book!! I read it every spare chance I had. It was so fun! I’m at a loss for words to describe how much I enjoyed relaxing and reading this book.

Charlotte was in her late 30s, divorced, and had two children. Early on in the story she read Jane Austen and decided to take a trip to Austenland while her kids were with their dad for part of the summer. If you’ve read Austenland you’ll remember Miss Charming. Well, she was back and as funny as ever with perfect comedic timing — hilarious.  There were a few other characters returning from Austenland. I enjoyed the continuation of their stories.

I really liked Austenland, but I loved Midnight in Austenland even more. The mystery added to the fun. I felt so uncomfortable for Charlotte at times, but in the end I was attached to the character and wanted to see her happy with her life. I recommend this book to everyone!

3 Stars: I Liked It

Timo, a fourteen year old flyer, lives in the mountains with his mother. For years, the Flyers of the Mountains have been enemies of the Wanderers of the Flatlands. To stop the old law: “Those who are born without wings have to die,” Timo is dragged into a plot where he must learn to use his special gift to bring the two misunderstood races together. As Wardor, the leader of the War Flyers, learns about the plot, he will stop at nothing to kill everyone involved. In her search for her missing brother, Val and Timo become close friends, but will they survive the impending war or will Val’s brother be lost to the old law?

My Thoughts:
This was a good book. The plot was so interesting that it kept me reading. Timo was 14 and a flyer. A flyer was a human with wings on their back. How cool is that?! I don’t know about you, but I’ve always thought flying would be the best super hero power. So, the fact that the characters had wings really kept me reading. The narration switched around to different characters, but mostly stayed with Timo.

The dialog and narrative was awkward for some reason. Some parts just felt stiff. On the other hand there were some really beautifully written parts as well. By the end of the book I was left wanting to know what happened next.

3 Stars: I Liked It
Rider, a fourteen year old Wanderer, has found shelter among the dead willows, the haunted place of the Flatlands. He is suffering from the abuse of his tyrant father, but his connection to nature and the elements keep him sane. He has a special gift that allows him to run with the antelope and to communicate with the animals. When he helps a young woman escape from a group of deadly hunters, he discovers that the mysterious, hated Flyers still exist. Drawn by curiosity and instinct, Rider uncovers a serious plot lead by his father to murder innocent children and to go to war against the Flyers. Rider has to stop his father and luckily he is not alone. One of his enemies is looking out for him, but will this be enough or will Rider be crushed by this father?
My Thoughts:
The writing was better for this book. I connected more with Rider, the wanderer. Again the narrator changed to different characters but mostly stayed with Rider. I wasn’t a huge fan of the villain narrative. Knowing what the villain was doing and thinking gave too much away when it could have been left a mystery longer.

There was a cute budding romance, and the plot was intriguing. I’d be interested to read the next book in the series.

3 Stars: I Liked It/ It Was OK

Jonathan Stewart is not at all happy about having to return to earth as a guardian angel, but it’s required of all post-mortal spirits to fulfill at least one angel guardianship. Fortunately, on the Guardians Unlimited application, he had the good sense to request a client with early-marked-death status, so he believes that while his stay on earth will be most unpleasant, at least it will be short. What he doesn’t know is that a spirit with EMD status can choose his or her time of death Jonathan’s client, Celeste Knight, has a mind of her own and refuses death at every turn, leaving him stuck as her guardian angel-in a place he only wanted to forget.

My Thoughts:
Let me start by saying I don’t like angel books. I know angels are real so it’s hard for me to read a fictional take on angels. It really just doesn’t interest me. That being said, the book was just okay for me. I liked the second half of the story though. The first half was really slow, and I had a hard time connecting with Jonathan. Halfway through the book the plot started to get interesting and more fast paced with some suspense. By that point I started to like Jonathan more, and it ended on a great note which is why I moved it up to 3 stars.

Just because I don’t like angel books doesn’t mean you won’t like this book. Try it out for yourself, and let me know what you think.

Book Review: Endlessly by Kiersten White

THIS IS THE 3rd BOOK IN A SERIES!

4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Try as she might, Evie can’t seem to escape her not-so-normal past. And what was supposed to be a blissfully normal school break is ruined when a massive group of paranormals shows up at her house, claiming that Evie is the only one who can protect them from a mysterious, perilous fate.
The deadly war between the faerie courts looms ever closer. The clock is ticking on the entire paranormal world. And its future rests solely in Evie’s hands.
So much for normal.
With a perfect blend of humor and suspense, Endlessly is everything readers could dream of in a conclusion—and the unexpected twists will keep them guessing until the very last page.

My Thoughts:
If you haven’t read this series you need to. It’s fun! Evie is now a senior in high school and living the dream. She has wanted to be a “normal” teenager for a long time, and now she can be. Of course we know better; Evie’s life never seems to stay normal for long.

I love this final installment of the trilogy. The story and Evie’s life come full circle. I love the reappearances of all our favorite guys. Lend, Reth, and Jack all come back for this finale. Reth is such a complicated character, and I love him for it. Is he good? Is he bad? It’s hard to ever know. Lend is as sweet and perfect as ever. I enjoy all the scenes with Evie and one of these three guys. The banter is laugh out loud funny!

Evie is still sarcastic, sassy, and fun. Her attitude comes across disrespectful and annoying at times, but that’s just the way she deals with her problems. She takes it out on those around her. Thankfully she lived and learned.

A fantastic end to this paranormal trilogy!

4 Stars: I Really Liked It

A faraway kingdom.
A beautiful princess.
A courageous hero.
A ruthless villain.
An impossible choice.

Eliana and Rinan are in love. However, she is destined to become queen of Bariwon, obligated to marry the victor of a competition called the Shoginoc, while Rinan, her royal guardian, is forbidden to marry. Normally they could renounce their titles to be together, but these are not normal times. Abrecan, the malevolent governor of Erd, is determined to win the Shoginoc, thereby placing his easily manipulated son Daimh on Bariwon’s throne. Can Eliana and Rinan find a way to be together without jeopardizing the peace they are so desperately trying to protect?

My Thoughts:
This book was great! I have to warn you that I yelled a third of the way through and almost didn’t finish reading it. Just know when you get to the part where you are BEYOND ANGRY at what just happened, keep reading. It gets better.

I have never read a book from so many different perspectives before. At first it was annoying, and I couldn’t keep track of what was going on. But eventually I kept up with it, and I think it added something special to the book. It was like an omniscient point of view. That’s not my preference when reading, but it worked well for this book.

The Hidden Sun was exciting, full of romance, suspense, and action! I love books with knights and sword fighting! Go read it. You’ll enjoy it. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review: Catspell by Danyelle Leafty

Title: Catspell

Publisher: Danyelle Leafty
Release Date: October 2011
Pages: eBook only
Series: The Fairy Godmother Dilemma #1
Source: author
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

A head cold can muddle the clearest of heads, and fairy godmothers are no exception.

Which is why Nerissa finds herself agreeing to help Breena, a Damsel in Distress, even though she’d rather wrangle a whole posse of evil stepmothers than accept the job. To her credit, Breena, would rather kiss a hundred toads than work with a fairy godmother.

After an ill-fated attempt to get out of their contract, Breena now has whiskers, claws, and a tail. Finding a suitable prince for a small, white cat isn’t going to be easy, but that’s the least of Nerissa’s problems. The person who gave Breena the “cat” potion isn’t going to stop until she’s destroyed everything Nerissa stands for as a fairy godmother.

If she wants to save Breena, Nerissa is going to have figure out where the fairy tale went wrong and how she can bring a Happily Ever After to the only girl she’s ever failed.

My Thoughts:
For some reason my expectations were a bit low for this book, but I ended up happily surprised to really like it! Maybe it was the cover. I just thought it would be too cheesy, but it’s not! In case you’re curious there’s no white haired girl in the book. The main character has long red hair (until she’s a white cat), and the fairy godmother is old with gray hair.

The story was told from 4 different characters. In other books changing from character to character can be annoying, but with this book it worked really well. The POV changes were predictable, which was nice (Each chapter changed to the next character in the same rotating order). Do you ever get annoyed when reading other books and the POV changes? You’re yelling, “Wait! No! Go back!” Well that didn’t happen for me in this book. The author did a phenomenal job transitioning from voice to voice.

Breena was a great character to cheer for. She didn’t always make the best choices. She learned from mistakes, and I liked her better for them. There was a prince in the story too of course. I love stories with Princes! This was an entertaining, fun read. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good fairy tale. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

When Emi Warrin wakes one night to find a thief in her mother’s house, she has no idea the intruder has planted a trap-a mysterious letter that will change her life forever. Lured to the Austrian Alps with Daniel, the man she loves, Emi is thrown into a perilous, mafia-like world of fueding families and a devastating curse that spans generations. As the Firstborn She, the only firstborn female in hundreds of years-only Emi can free her family from the curse that will soon afflict her as well. But for Emi to breake the curse, she must delve into her family’s dark past, and she must gain the trust of those who would use her for their own evil designs. As Emi struggles to understand her destiny as the Firstborn She, she learns that everything isn’t as it seems and that all choices have consequences. Can Emi break the curse before it’s too late?

My Thoughts:
This book was really fun. Don’t you love the cover too? Emi is 23 years old and trying to be more independent from her mom. The story starts off right into the excitement. The mafia elements were unique for me. I haven’t read many books with mafia type characters.

There were some occasional chapters from other points of view which added to the story. The love triangle was really interesting and exciting. Daniel had been her friend for many years then someone new comes around who was very charismatic. No, I won’t say anymore. I don’t want to give anything away!

Overall a great read. There was suspense, spying, sadness, action, crazy mafia, and romantic tension!

Book 1: Divergent ( MY REVIEW )

Title: Insurgent

5 Stars: I LOVED IT!

One choice can transform you–or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves–and herself–while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris’s initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable–and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

“New York Times” bestselling author Veronica Roth’s much-anticipated second book of the dystopian “Divergent” series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

My Thoughts:
Wow. This book made me so stressed. Talk about feeling attached to the characters! This book and series is great if you love adventure and sitting on the edge of your seat while biting your nails.

Insurgent started right where Divergent ended. I hadn’t read Divergent in awhile so I was a bit lost at first with all the names and references to what happened. I still think I should go back and re-read these books. They are so full of detail. I loved the world building. These people are in factions where their good attributes are starting to show flaws. Take the faction Dauntless for example. Bravery was great until some let it turn into recklessness. It’s so interesting to see how everyone reacts to the bad things happening.

Tris had been through a lot in book 1. Her behavior was now a bit unpredictable. Tris wasn’t the type of heroine who fights to live. She was very human and flawed and raw at this point. She was so real. That’s why I loved her character even more in this book.

There were some really funny parts though for it being such a suspenseful book. I seriously laughed out loud, surprised at the humor. It was a great read! I can’t wait for the next installment. The last words I wrote in my notes immediately after finishing the book were: Intense. Exciting. Heart Pounding.

4 Stars: I Really Liked It

The last thing that the girls at the elite Jane Austen Academy need is hot guys to flirt with. Please. They need to stay focused on something that lasts much longer: an acceptance letter from an Ivy.

But over the summer the school has been sold, and like it or not, the guys are coming. And it’s about to turn the Academy–and the lives of its students–totally upside down…
* * *
To say Lizzie and Dante are polar opposites is the understatement of the century. He’s a snooty Exeter transfer with more money than Google. She’s a driven study-a-holic barely keeping up with tuition. It’s obvious that Dante thinks he’s way too good for Lizzie. And Lizzie knows Dante is a snob with a gift for pushing her buttons.

But things are changing fast this year at the Academy. And when Lizzie’s quest to stop those changes blows up in her face, taking her oldest friendship with it, she has nowhere else to turn but to Dante, with his killer blue eyes, his crazy-sexy smile, and his secrets… Secrets Lizzie can’t seem to leave alone, no matter how hard she tries…

My Thoughts:
This was a really entertaining read. It was hilarious to see the behind the scenes of what happens when an all-girl school suddenly accepts boys. Most of the girls love the new additions, but Lizzie isn’t excited about the additional academic competition. She had dreams and goals and didn’t want boys to get in the way.

I was confused at first trying to figure out how all the additional characters fit into a Pride and Prejudice retelling then I realized there were other Jane Austen characters present. Some were from Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma. That made the read all the more fun for me since I’ve read and loved all of Jane Austen’s books.

The romance was fun and at times sweet. Overall the book felt a bit rushed, probably because it was such a short read. I wanted more details of Lizzie’s background. I wanted so much more when the read was over so I’m really looking forward to reading the next book coming out this month!
