4 Stars: I Really Liked It

It’s the summer of 1913 and Cora Kensington’s life on the family farm has taken a dark turn. Not only are the crops failing, but someone dear to Cora is failing as well.

In one fateful afternoon, a stranger comes to call, and Cora discovers a terrible secret about her past…a secret that will radically change her future.

Cora is invited to take the “Grand Tour” of Europe, a journey intended to finish a person’s eduction, to solidify an understanding of ancient culture and contemporary refinement. As she travels from England to France, with kin she’s never known, Cora encounters the blessings of a family name, as well as the curses. But when an unbidden love begins to form, she realizes the journey is only beginning….

The first book in the Grand Tour series will take readers on a journey of cultural refinement, but moreover, explores what truly informs a person’s sense of identity.

My Thoughts:
I loved Lisa T. Bergren’s River of Time series so when I saw this one I knew I had to read it. It was very different from the River of Time books with much less action, but Lisa delivered again with amazing characters you can’t help but fall in love with and scenery you’ll be dying to visit.

Cora (side note: I love that name) was twenty years old when her life changed drastically. Obviously I don’t want to ruin the mystery so I won’t tell you what happens. Some of the other kids her age on the Grand Tour aren’t happy to have a girl from a farm accompanying them. Cora had to learn to maneuver through some tricky relationships. Cora was someone I really wanted to see succeed. I enjoyed watching her journey. There were a few guys with romantic interest involved which always makes the read more interesting for me.

The scenery was beautiful. It made me want to take a tour of Europe. I’ve always wanted visit London and France and Italy. The characters were able to see some amazing sites. There was mystery and excitement throughout. I’m looking forward to continuing the tour with Cora in the next book of the series!

Title: Cinder

5 Stars: I LOVED IT!!!

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, the ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

My Thoughts:
I’ve wanted to read this book for months! The cover rocks. I finally got the chance, and it was amazing. I loved this book!! 5 Stars! Warning: I almost gave it 4 stars because I was so mad that the ending left me hanging so badly, but once I calmed down I realized I loved the read so much it deserved 5 stars. I’m dying to read the next book! I haven’t been this into a series in awhile.

I don’t read sci-fi so I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t expecting it to be a new favorite that’s for sure.

I loved the world of New Beijing. It was intense and heart breaking. The plague was terrifying and hopeless. Cinder was a cyborg which meant she was human but had machine parts added by scientists after an accident of some kind. The human citizens looked down on the cyborgs. Some felt they should have died in whatever accident made them need cyborg parts. They felt it was unnatural and basically were scared of them. Cinder lived in fear that people would discover she was cyborg. Her “family” hated her for it.

Cinder’s best friend was her droid Iko, a robot. Iko was unique with her personality. I loved it! She had a crush on the Prince. My favorite quote by Iko was after meeting the Prince. “Prince Kai! Check my fan, I think I’m overheating.” (pg. 14) Prince Kai was great! I think I’ll stop here so I don’t give away any of the amazing twists and turns throughout the book.

Cinder took me on an amazing ride. I laughed. I cried. I screamed. I sighed. It was wonderful.

Marissa Meyer will be at the Austin Teen Book Festival on September 29th. I can’t wait!

3 Stars: I Liked It

Willa’s secret plan seems all too simple: take from the rich kids at Valley Prep and give to the poor ones.

Yet Willa’s turn as Robin Hood at her ultra-exclusive high school is anything but. Bilking her “friends”-known to everyone as the Glitterati-without them suspecting a thing, is far from easy. Learning how to pick pockets and break into lockers is as difficult as she’d thought it’d be. Delivering care packages to the scholarship girls, who are ostracized just for being from the “wrong” side of town, is way more fun than she’d expected.

The complication Willa didn’t expect, though, is Aidan Murphy, Valley Prep’s most notorious (and gorgeous) ace-degenerate. His mere existence is distracting Willa from what matters most to her-evening the social playing field between the have and have-nots. There’s no time for crushes and flirting with boys, especially conceited and obnoxious trust-funders like Aidan.

But when the cops start investigating the string of burglaries at Valley Prep and the Glitterati begin to seek revenge, could he wind up being the person that Willa trusts most?

My Thoughts:
There were some things I liked and didn’t like in Pretty Crooked. It was an interesting plot idea, a modern day Robin Hood. I don’t think Willa came across as noble as Robin Hood though which maybe wasn’t the intent or moral of the story anyway. Robin Hood was back in Medieval Times right? He was kind of like a police office in a corrupt monarchy. Willa, on the other hand, is a modern teenager trying to give retribution to girls that definitely deserve it, but breaking the law really isn’t the best way to do it.

Willa is interesting. I’m not sure if I like her that much. She makes some really dumb decisions. She’s been through a lot so it’s understandable that she’s having a hard time. Willa and her single mom had a good relationship until they moved to the rich neighborhood, and her mom got secretive and busy. The biggest pull for me to read the next book in the series is to find out more about her mom’s secrets, very intriguing.

This book brings up the modern issue of cyber bullying. This definitely wasn’t a problem in my day. (Which, by the way, I’m not ancient or anything. My 10 year reunion is coming up soon. Hmm maybe that does make me ancient.) I’m sure this happens in high schools all over, and it’s truly appalling. Willa definitely had her heart in the right place when she tried to help these girls being bullied for being the scholarship kids at a rich private school.

4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Ever since Evie’s photojournalist dad died, paralyzing fear prevents her from picking up a camera. If Evie can’t pull it together, she’ll lose her position as Yearbook Photo Editor and suffer academic failure. Even worse, Evie risks losing Jordan, her secret crush. Despite a falling out, Evie never forgot Jordan. Now they are lab partners and the chemistry definitely sparks between them. But Evie’s supposed friend, Parvani, wants Jordan for herself. Parvani possesses a brimstone-hissing spell book. Soon the moon will be in the optimum phase for a binding love spell. To save Jordan, Evie must join forces with Salem, the school Goth. The clock is ticking. Can Evie get her mojo back in time to check this spell?

My Thoughts:
This book was really fun! The spell stuff was a little weird for me since they were in a regular high school. It wasn’t like it was a fantasy world. But even with my dislike of the love potion idea I still really liked this book. It had a lot more depth to it than I expected.

Evie was a freshman and Parvani was her best friend who had a crush on Jordan, Evie’s childhood friend. I liked that Evie and Jordan had a history. They played together as little kids and had a ton of memories of going to theme parks and playing at each other’s houses, too cute. Then they had a fall out in junior high, definitely relatable. Most of us probably had elementary school friends we weren’t friends with by high school. Parvani was a little naive and a freshman so she thought she should give Jordan a love potion. Evie didn’t always make the best choices, but hey she was young and allowed to make silly mistakes especially while grieving the death of her father.

My favorite scenes were during the capture the flag games, so fun. It brought back a bunch of memories for me. One thing that drove me crazy throughout the book was that Jordan said “like” too much. It was easily ignored though.

I highly recommend this enjoyable book! If you’re in the mood for a fun, young high school book with a little spell action go check it out.

Book Review, until i die

Book Review: Until I Die by Amy Plum

THIS IS THE 2ND BOOK IN THE SERIES!
Book 1- Die For Me ( My Review )

Title: Until I Die
Author: Amy Plum
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: May 2012
Pages: 357
Series: Revenants #2
Source: library
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.

As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.

In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.

My Thoughts:
Until I Die picked up the story a month after Die For Me ends. Luckily, I’d read book 1 recently so I was ready to continue the tale. There were some great side characters in this series. Again, I loved Kate’s sister Georgia. She was so fun and spunky, always good for a laugh. Ambrose and Charlotte are great friends to have around, and Jules was great again. I’m interested to see where his feelings for Kate will lead since he is completely loyal to his friend Vincent.

This 2nd book in the series was a bit slower than book 1 for me, not really in a bad way. The romance was already established so all the intensity of finding love wasn’t really there since it was found already. I liked how mature Kate and Vincent were in their relationship. They do a good job talking through their feelings which made for a healthy relationship that I think will last.

I have to say that I didn’t like how intimate their relationship was getting. They’re not married, end of story. My personal belief is a man and woman should be married before they are sexually intimate so I don’t enjoy reading books where the main characters are too sexually intimate before marriage. They didn’t have sex, but I was thinking they would. Those scenes weren’t often though. Read my content ratings below for more details.

I loved the ending of this book! I know many of you might not agree, but it was just so exciting. I have high hopes for the way things will turn out. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Book Review: Night Marchers by Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckles

Title: Night Marchers
Author: Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckles
Publisher: self published
Release Date: October 2011
Pages: 350
Series: Night Marchers #1

3 Stars: I Liked It

“NEVER, EVER lock eyes with a Night Marcher!” Everyone in Hawaii has heard this warning, except for seventeen-year-old Emma Townsend that is. For most Hawaiians know that looking into the eyes of Night Marcher can strike a curse that will end in death or eternal servitude.

Even though her father, who is a paranormal investigator, solely raised Emma, she has little experience in the realm of the supernatural. When she is forced to move with her father to Hawaii, only months before her graduation, Emma finds that her world as she knows it, is shaken when she starts seeing the unexplainable: fire balls in the distance, beating drums in the middle of nowhere and strangers who vanish into thin air. Then one day when she has a run in with a procession of Night Marchers, ancient Hawaiian spirits wandering from their burial grounds to their locations of battles past, Emma has no choice but to believe that the unbelievable does exist.

Now Emma must go on the run with the help of a mysterious stranger, as they seek out how to free Emma from the curse of a Night Marcher, who will stop at nothing to get her soul.

My Thoughts:
Emma was a few months from graduating high school when her dad moved them to Hawaii from Texas. Her dad’s job entailed chasing paranormal events. A rich couple paid well for her and her dad to move to Hawaii for him to investigate some paranormal activities. I loved the Texas details at the beginning of the book since that’s where I live. Texas pride! Of course the Hawaii scenery was beautiful too. I would love to visit those beaches.

The beginning and some parts throughout were a bit slow for me. I liked when Emma met Tristan and later Kai. Tristan was fun and a great friend for Emma. Kai seemed stiff to me, but that was explained later. Overall this book was entertaining and showed promise for the next book in the series. I look forward to reading book two and seeing where Emma’s journey will go!

4 Stars: I Really Liked It

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen;or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It’s all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

My Thoughts:
This was my second time to read Austenland, and I liked it even better this time. Jane’s obsession with the romance in the BBC Pride and Prejudice movie made me want to watch it. I found some clips on the BBCWorldWide channel on You Tube if you’re interested.

Jane is someone you really want to root for. The poor girl (woman actually since she’s 32) has had a rough love life. Boyfriend after boyfriend turn out to be disappointments. Before the chapters there’s a story about each of Jane’s “boyfriends” from 4 years old to present. Some were hilarious, some embarrassing, and some just plain sad. I so wanted Jane to be able to find true love.

I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen’s books. I’ve read them all, some multiple times. I would love to go to an Austenland, but maybe one with married couples allowed. I just want to go dress up and learn the dances and go to a ball.

If you haven’t read this book you need. It’s plain fun, and a short read too. There’s a movie being made so get it read before it comes out. With Jennifer Coolage as Miss Charming it is bound to be HILARIOUS!! CLICK HERE to see some movie details on imdb. This is an all star cast! Stephenie Meyer is one of the producers even. The official website for the movie is coming soon, CLICK HERE.

Have you read Austenland? Did you like it? Will you go see the movie when it comes out?

Book Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: April 2012
Pages: 327
Series: The Selection #1
Source: library
4 Stars: I Really Liked It

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself- and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My Thoughts:
This cover is my favorite cover of 2012 so far. It is gorgeous and eye catching. The cover, premise, and genre as a dystopian might make you think this book is dark, edgy, and mysterious . . . not true. This book was very light, especially compared to other dystopian books. It’s so light that you might even laugh out loud a few times; I sure did. 🙂

At first I didn’t like the main character America. She didn’t want to be part of the Selection, and was pretty upset about it. She had good reasons to be sad, but I would have been more like her friend Marlee, bubbly and excited to meet the prince. I grew to love America once she was in the palace. She was funny, strong, kind, and brave. I liked the way she interacted with her maids. The maids were fun. Prince Maxon was wonderful, and I liked the times America and Maxon were together.

The caste system was rigid, and the post- United States of America as we know it made this dystopian. The country in this book definitely had problems that will need to be taken care of for success and people’s happiness. I’m going to guess that the next book in the series will be more action packed.

I was so upset with the ending! You can’t leave me hanging like that! I expected more, but a lot was left for the next book in the series. I look forward to reading the next book. This was an enjoyable read.

Life went along simply, if not rather monotonously, for Breck McCall. Her job was satisfying, she had true friends. But she felt empty . . . as if part of her soul was detached and lost to her. She longed for something . . . something which seemed to be missing. Yet, there were moments when Breck felt she might almost touch something wonderful. And most of those moments came while in the presence of her handsome, yet seemingly haunted boss . . . Reese Thatcher.

My Thoughts:
Oh my heck I loved this book! I’ve heard so many great things about Marcia Lynn McClure’s books from I Am A Reader, Not A Writer so I knew I just had to read one and find out for myself. If you love clean romance you will love this book. It was addicting! I finished it in a day and was giddy throughout.

Breck was 20-21 during the book, and I don’t know if Reese’s age was mentioned. I pictured him being 25ish. The chemistry between Breck and Reese was great. I loved that she had such a crush on her boss, so cute. Most of the story was told from Breck’s POV, but it did change to Reese sometimes which I enjoyed.

I have to mention Breck’s four best friends: Barb, Trixie, Kay, and Sherryl. They were awesome. I loved their banter. When they were together they giggled and joked and could be completely goofy. It reminded me of being with my college roommates . . . good times. I laughed out loud more than a few times.

This was a quick read and completely enjoyable! I recommend it to all you clean romance lovers.

Flashback Friday: Matched by Ally Condie

Happy Friday! Flashback Friday is where I review a book I loved but haven’t read in awhile or was published over a year ago. If you post a Flashback Friday leave me a link in the comments.

I just re-read this book, and added an update to my review.

Title: Matched
Author: Ally Condie
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Release Date: November 2010
Pages: 366
Series: Matched #1
Source: Library
5 Stars: I Loved It!

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

My Thoughts:
July 2011
I loved this book! Wow! Why is a forbidden romance so intriguing?! I actually listened to this on cd for a trip; then finished listening at home. I prefer books because they’re easier to put down and find my place again when one of my kids runs into the room asking for breakfast in a very loud voice.

The dystopian storyline and romance (1 girl with 2 boys to choose from) reminds me of other books, but that doesn’t bother me. It’s completely entertaining. I like that Cassia is smart and pretty quick to pick up on things. It’s always annoying when the main character can’t figure out the obvious for most of the book. Not so for this book, I didn’t see what was coming at all or only guessed shortly before Cassia figured it out.

The 2 boys are Ky and Xander. Both amazing guys that happen to be very attractive. I won’t go into detail on how wonderful these guys are for Cassia; you can discover that for yourselves.

Update: May 2012
I just finished reading this book for the first time since last time I listened to the audio book. I fell in love all over again! Ally Condie is an amazing writer. The words were so smooth and beautiful, like poetry. I love revisiting books. It was so fun to go back into the world of Matched. I recommend this book to everyone!
